What to Grow in January and Freeze Protection for the Garden

Happy New Year Garden Friend,

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and are gearing up for a great growing season!

Tips for the garden this month:

Don't Forget: Purchase veggie seeds that you want to grow this year.

Here are some of my favorites online seed stores to shop from: Renee's Garden and Botanical Interest. They have lots of heirloom and organic varieties to choose from.

Here are some plants I am starting to grow indoors this month: tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, kale and kohlrabi.

Don't Forget: Protect your garden from frost. First read How to Protect your Plants from a Texas Cold Snap. Frost cloth, hoops and clamps will come in handy this January and February. Here are my must have items:

Add compost (about 1"-2") to your garden beds to refresh them for Spring. Your soil microbes and plants will thank you.

Prune any fruit trees by removing dead branches and thinning out branches if needed.
