5 Raised Bed Mistakes I See Every Spring

Hi Garden Friend!

Raised beds are one of the easiest ways to grow a productive vegetable garden… but I see the same mistakes happen over and over again.

And the frustrating part? Most of them are completely avoidable once you know what to look for.

Here are 5 raised bed mistakes I see all the time:

  1. Using wood that’s too thin
It’s tempting to save money on lumber, but thin boards often warp, rot, or break much faster than thicker boards.
  2. Growing vegetables in too much shade
Most vegetables need 6–8 hours of direct sunlight to grow well. Raised beds placed in shady areas often lead to slow growth and disappointing harvests.
  3. Cutting corners on soil quality
Poor soil means poor harvests. Your soil mix is the foundation of your entire garden.
  4. Placing beds too close together
If you can’t comfortably walk between your beds, maintaining and harvesting your garden quickly becomes frustrating.
  5. Forgetting to level your raised beds
A bed that isn’t level can cause uneven watering and soil shifting over time.

These are just 5 of the 10 mistakes I see most often when people build raised bed gardens.

If you’re planning a new garden or refreshing your beds this season, this guide will help you avoid the most common pitfalls.

Hi Garden Friend! If you’ve ever wanted a garden that smells amazing, tastes better, and actually makes life easier… I think herbs are the answer. They’re some of the simplest, most rewarding plants to grow for beginner gardeners, and they save you money too! Those little grocery store herb packs add up fast, but one herb plant can give you many harvests for months (herbs are truly one of the biggest bang-for-your-buck crops in a home garden). Here are a few herb articles to help you get...

Hi Garden Friend! If you’ve ever wanted flowers that feel easy and joyful to grow…zinnias are it. I planted a small row one summer 20 years ago just to try them, and suddenly I had bouquets on my kitchen table. Bees everywhere, bright colors in my veggie beds, and flowers to share with neighbors. Now I never skip zinnias. If you want that same magic in your garden, I put together a simple guide for you. 👉 Read the full guide: How to Grow Zinnias for Endless Backyard Bouquets Here’s what...

Hi Garden Friend! Can I tell you something? Some of my favorite harvests haven’t come from big raised beds… they’ve come from simple pots on a patio. If you’ve been putting off gardening because you don’t have a backyard, or you feel overwhelmed by the idea of “starting a whole garden”, container gardening is such a gentle way to begin. A few good pots, quality soil, sunshine, and you’re on your way. You don’t need a big plan. You just need a place to start. My Favorite Fabric Lined Pots...
