5 Raised Bed Mistakes I See Every Spring

Hi Garden Friend!

Raised beds are one of the easiest ways to grow a productive vegetable garden… but I see the same mistakes happen over and over again.

And the frustrating part? Most of them are completely avoidable once you know what to look for.

Here are 5 raised bed mistakes I see all the time:

  1. Using wood that’s too thin
It’s tempting to save money on lumber, but thin boards often warp, rot, or break much faster than thicker boards.
  2. Growing vegetables in too much shade
Most vegetables need 6–8 hours of direct sunlight to grow well. Raised beds placed in shady areas often lead to slow growth and disappointing harvests.
  3. Cutting corners on soil quality
Poor soil means poor harvests. Your soil mix is the foundation of your entire garden.
  4. Placing beds too close together
If you can’t comfortably walk between your beds, maintaining and harvesting your garden quickly becomes frustrating.
  5. Forgetting to level your raised beds
A bed that isn’t level can cause uneven watering and soil shifting over time.

These are just 5 of the 10 mistakes I see most often when people build raised bed gardens.

If you’re planning a new garden or refreshing your beds this season, this guide will help you avoid the most common pitfalls.

Hi Garden Friend, As the temperatures start climbing, one of the most common questions I get is some version of: "Am I watering my garden right?" The honest answer? I put together a full guide on the 5 different ways to water your vegetable garden, and I want to share the highlights with you here. THE 5 WATERING...

Hi Garden Friend! I’ve built a lot of raised beds over the years — for my own garden and for clients — and I can tell you this… Not all materials are created equal. If you’re thinking about building a raised bed (or redoing one), I put everything I’ve learned into this post: 👉 The Best Materials...
