5 Things I'm Doing in the Garden This October 🍂

Hi Garden Friend!

October is one of my favorite months to be out in the garden! After months of summer heat, the cooler temperatures are such a welcome change. And the best part? There's still plenty of growing to do!

Whether you're starting a new garden or keeping an established one going, here are five things I'm focusing on this month.

1. Planting Cool-Season Favorites

I'm filling garden beds with lettuce, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, and other cool-season vegetables. October is a great time to get these crops growing here in Central Texas. I'm also direct sowing carrots, radishes, and other root vegetables.

If you're still figuring out what to plant, check out my guide to planning your fall vegetable garden to help you get started.

2. Keeping an Eye Out for Pests

Just because summer is over doesn't mean the pests are gone! Cabbage worms and aphids love our fall gardens, so I'm checking the undersides of leaves regularly. Catching them early makes a big difference.

If you're spotting unwanted visitors, I've got some helpful tips for getting rid of aphids naturally and keeping cabbage worms from eating your plants.

3. Adjusting the Watering Schedule

As temperatures cool down, plants generally don't need as much water as they did during our scorching summer days. I'm checking soil moisture and adjusting irrigation schedules so garden beds stay consistently moist without being overwatered.

Not sure if your watering setup is working for you? Here are 5 different ways to water your vegetable garden.

4. Giving the Soil a Little Love

Before planting new crops, I'm refreshing garden beds with compost and adding organic fertilizer based on what the plants need. Healthy soil makes such a difference, especially when you're growing vegetables season after season in the same raised beds.

If your soil could use a boost, read more about adding compost to your vegetable garden and when to fertilize for healthy plant growth.

5. Making Room for Fall Flowers

Vegetables aren't the only thing I'm planting! I love adding flowers like calendula and nasturtiums to fall gardens. They bring beautiful color, attract pollinators, and make the garden feel a little more cheerful.

Looking to add some color to your garden? Here are 15 of my favorite fall flowers to grow.

harvested garlic

Hi Garden Friend! Every fall, I tuck a few dozen garlic cloves into the garden, then mostly forget about them until spring. That’s why garlic is one of my favorite crops. If you’ve never grown it, this is your sign. Here’s the quick version: Plant in fall. Aim for 4–6 weeks before your first hard frost. In warmer areas you can plant later in fall or even early winter. Skip grocery store garlic. It’s often treated so it won’t sprout. Use seed garlic instead. Give it sun and good soil. Full...

Parsley, chives, pansies, and cilantro growing in a raised bed garden

Hi Garden Friend! Fall is one of my favorite times in the garden. The weather is finally starting to cool down, there’s plenty we can still plant, and somehow a warm bowl of soup tastes even better after a day spent outside. So this week, I pulled together a few of my favorite fall garden ideas (plus two cozy recipes!) to help you enjoy the season. CREATE AN EDIBLE FALL PLANTER I love a pretty fall planter, but it doesn’t have to be filled with just mums! Mix in herbs, leafy greens, and other...
