Why Is My Fall Garden Growing So Slowly? 🌱

Hi Garden Friend!

Have you noticed your fall vegetables aren't growing quite as quickly as you'd hoped?

You're not imagining things!

Even though our cooler fall weather is perfect for growing lettuce, kale, broccoli, and other cool-season veggies, there's one thing we can't control: shorter days.

With fewer hours of sunlight, plants naturally slow their growth, especially as we move closer to winter.

A few things I'm doing to keep my fall gardens happy:

  • Making sure plants get as much sunlight as possible.
  • Keeping soil consistently moist.
  • Feeding plants only when needed.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is give your garden a little patience!

If you’ve never grown it, this is your sign. Here’s the quick version: Plant in fall. Aim for 4–6 weeks before your first hard frost. In warmer areas you can plant later in fall or even early winter. Skip grocery store garlic. It’s often treated so it won’t sprout. Use seed garlic instead. Give it sun and good soil. Full...

Parsley, chives, pansies, and cilantro growing in a raised bed garden

The weather is finally starting to cool down, there’s plenty we can still plant, and somehow a warm bowl of soup tastes even better after a day spent outside. So this week, I pulled together a few of my favorite fall garden ideas (plus two cozy recipes!) to help you enjoy the season. CREATE AN EDIBLE FALL PLANTER I love a pretty fall planter, but it doesn’t have to be filled with just mums! Mix in herbs, leafy greens, and other...
