It’s garlic planting time 🧄

Hi Garden Friend!

Every fall, I tuck a few dozen garlic cloves into the garden, then mostly forget about them until spring. That’s why garlic is one of my favorite crops.

If you’ve never grown it, this is your sign. Here’s the quick version:

  • Plant in fall. Aim for 4–6 weeks before your first hard frost. In warmer areas you can plant later in fall or even early winter.
  • Skip grocery store garlic. It’s often treated so it won’t sprout. Use seed garlic instead.
  • Give it sun and good soil. Full sun, loose soil, and plenty of compost. Plant cloves pointy end up, 2–3 inches deep and 4–6 inches apart.
  • Then be patient. Water lightly through winter, feed it in early spring, and harvest when about half the lower leaves have turned brown.

Two varieties I recommend this year:

🧄 Italian Early (softneck). A great pick for milder winters. It also stores beautifully, so you’ll be cooking with it for months.

🧄 Killarney Red (hardneck). Rich, bold flavor, and you get a bonus harvest of garlic scapes in spring. It does best where winters get cold.

I put everything I’ve learned about planting, feeding, harvesting, and curing garlic into one beginner-friendly guide:
