What I plant every single year (no matter what)

Hi Garden Friend!

Every year, no matter what I’m experimenting with or trying out for the first time, there are a handful of plants that always make it into my garden.

These are the ones I rely on and honestly just make my time gardening feel worth it.

If you’re ever unsure what to grow, I suggest picking 5 things you love to eat or look at.

Here are my top 5:

1. TOMATOES

I don’t think I’ve ever had a garden without tomatoes. They’re one of my favorite things to grow, but they can also be a little frustrating if a few key things go wrong.

2. BASIL

If you grow tomatoes, you have to grow basil. It’s easy, fast-growing, and perfect for pesto making and fresh homemade pizzas all summer long.

3. CARROTS

Carrots are one of those crops that feel a little magical. You plant a tiny seed and pull up something completely different. They take a little patience, but they’re worth it.

4. BROCCOLI

Homegrown broccoli tastes completely different than what you get at the store—especially when you harvest it at the right time. This is one I always make space for in cooler seasons.

5. CUT FLOWERS

Even if your goal is vegetables, I always recommend adding flowers. They bring in pollinators, make your garden feel alive, and you get fresh bouquets all season long.

One thing that’s made a big difference for me, especially with growing these crops, is keeping spacing simple.

If you don’t want to overthink it, I’ve used systems like this garden grid that basically handle spacing and watering at the same time. It’s one of those things that just makes the whole process easier.

And if you want to take this a step further, I use my Garden Planner & Journal every season to map all of this out before planting. It makes a huge difference.

Hi Garden Friend, As the temperatures start climbing, one of the most common questions I get is some version of: "Am I watering my garden right?" The honest answer? It depends — on your setup, your climate, your soil, and what you're growing. But getting it right makes a huge difference in how happy and healthy your plants are all season long. I put together a full guide on the 5 different ways to water your vegetable garden, and I want to share the highlights with you here. THE 5 WATERING...

Hi Garden Friend! I’ve built a lot of raised beds over the years — for my own garden and for clients — and I can tell you this… Not all materials are created equal. Some look great at first and then fall apart way too fast. Some are cheap upfront but end up costing more because you’re replacing them. And some are just not something I’d feel good growing food in. If you’re thinking about building a raised bed (or redoing one), I put everything I’ve learned into this post: 👉 The Best Materials...
